Stem Cell Therapy Could Solve Unmet Need for Pain Relief
Although reliable therapy for knee osteoarthritis (OA) exists, treatment is not always successful. New ways of treating pain are crucial for patients whose pain persists, especially those who cannot, or will not, tolerate knee replacement therapy.
Data published in November 2023, in Arthritis Research & Therapy, found that intra-articular injections of autologous adipose-derived stem cells or adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction significantly improve pain and function in knee OA. Mesenchymal stem cells, in particular, have shown promise in restoring damaged cartilage and slowing the progression of knee OA.
Although additional study is needed, researchers found the therapy promising.
