Are Chronic Pain and Dementia Connected?
A recent study out of England found that chronic pain—which activates microglia, and thus inflammation in the brain— could lead to dementia in older adults. Researchers say their findings suggest that such pain is biologically linked to detrimental brain changes which can eventually evolve into dementia. Going forward, they will need to follow patients for longer timeframes to study how biological and cognitive findings change over time, and to explore the effect of anti-inflammatory medication.
